Design – The building of a book cover

I thought I’d share a bit about the building of a book cover.  Romance author Louise Behiel came to me awhile back requesting a cover design for her first book Family Ties. At first she had a very detailed idea of what she wanted. The story is about a single mom with four foster kids and the sexy man who moves into the house next door. The first proof looked like this.

(Note the title changed in later versions.) But this didn’t quite hit the mark because the kids in the story are older and Louise seemed to have her heart set on showing the two houses. We searched through lots of stock photos but couldn’t find exactly what we’re were looking for.

And sometimes that’s the problem with trying to encompass too much of the story in a single cover image.  Too many images, too much detail can detract from the impact you’re trying to make. It can confuse the potential reader instead of drawing them in.

I mentioned this to Louise though I’m not sure she was convinced at this point so I put together a few more proofs.

This one was definitely simpler and I thought it gave that neighborly feel…who hasn’t peeked out their windows at their neighbors.

In this proof, the porch swing and flowers suggest romance. I still really like this one and may use it in my pre-made cover gallery when I get that up and running.  And although Louise liked it, it still didn’t quite fit the bill.

So what did we end up with?  Below is the final cover. When Louise saw this one she said she knew right away that was it. She said it caught the theme of the story perfectly. A broken fence plays a major part in what brings the hero and heroine together.  But you can read what Louise had to say about the process here.

So what do you think?

The book is on sale now at Amazon!

Grayson Mills realized long ago that he’s unable to establish and sustain meaningful relationships – especially with women. He’s constructed a lifestyle that leaves him alone and his sexy new neighbor isn’t going to change his decision – especially since she has a horde of kids running around.  Child psychologist Andie Bowen has four foster children, all with high emotional needs. Andie’s committed to the children and she’s not going to upset them by getting involved with a man who could never accept her family.

When six-year-old Chloe breaks into Gray’s home, Andie is appalled, until she realizes that Jamie, her clinging youngest child, has left her side for the first time in months. He’s looking at one of Gray’s treasures, a model car. As Gray realizes the importance of the boy’s behavior, he knows she will race out to buy a model but won’t have any idea how to build it, so he offers to help.

When an unknown assailant starts tormenting Andie’s family, Gray steps in to protect his neighbor and her family. At the same time, he has to confront the nightmares from his childhood that have returned with a vengeance.  Together Andie and Gray will face his past while he struggles to keep Andie and her children safe.
